Home Plumbing

These plumbing repair secrets are just that – the inside scoop on what your plumber really wants you to know.

It can happen to all of us without warning. A plumbing problem or emergency doesn’t always announce itself, so it’s best to be prepared. If you’ve worked with a plumber before, it can seem like they show up and know exactly what to do. They’re trained extensively and always learning on the job, but there are some tips and tricks to plumbing repair that you should know too!  Earthwise Home Services is here to help Texans in the Dallas area with their plumbing, heating, and cooling systems. Knowing the weather in Texas, it’s our job to patch up any issues and keep everyone comfortable.

When to call a professional for your plumbing repair

Sometimes a plumbing issue can be a matter of DIYing it, but there are definitely times when you should call a professional. Damage from bad plumbing, whether it’s due to a sudden problem or the consequence of a DIY, can be disastrous. It turns out that most homeowners spend between $1,000 and $3,500 to repair water damage. If you notice a problem just starting out, it’s best to get a permanent solution rather than saving money in the short term.

If you’re experiencing a burst pipe or damaged sewer line, don’t waste any time! You could be exposed to hazardous waste or mold if the problem gets out of hand.
But in the cases where you can handle a problem yourself, or help your plumber out before they get there, you’ll want to know these next plumbing repair secrets!

The inside scoop to some great plumbing repair secrets

Don’t believe everything on the package. We all know that we can’t believe everything we read, and this goes for things we see on product packaging. A lot of people love using wet wipes in the bathroom, but take a look at the packaging. It’ll almost always claim that it’s flushable. Here’s a time where you shouldn’t believe what’s on the package. These wipes aren’t flushable and they won’t dissolve the same way toilet paper will. “Flushable” wipes can cause a clog in your system. Over time, you may have to pay a pretty hefty bill to get this fixed. Even New York City is having problems thanks to these wipes being flushed, so it’s best to avoid it!

Put down the drain cleaner

Sometimes we all like to pick up the easiest option around. If you’re experiencing a drain that’s backing up, it’s likely that you’re tempted to reach for the drain cleaner. Here’s the insider information you may not know: drain cleaners actually do more harm than good! It turns out that the chemicals in drain cleaners are not only bad for your health when you inhale them, but in fact, drain cleaners are known to damage pipes by corroding the insides of them. If you use them regularly, you may be setting yourself up for major problems down the road. Drain cleaners may not even be the solution to your problem. Knowing the actual cause of your backup can be more helpful to solving your problem.

If it’s hair, you can use thin kitchen tongs to remove the gunk. Home supply stores also carry items to unclog hair from drains. But if you’re having a larger sewer drainage issue, using the drain cleaner won’t help either way. Call a professional if you suspect this is the case!

Getting back a lost ring isn’t too hard

Plumbing Tips TexasIt happens pretty often: someone drops a ring or other important item down the drain. Avoid the tears and avoid calling a plumber by getting it yourself. Once the ring is dropped down the drain, immediately shut off the water and get to work.  Clear out the area under your sink and place a bucket underneath your pipes. You’ll want to use a wrench to loosen the nuts holding things together. The ring is likely within the “J-Bend” of your sink piping so you’ll want to remove that bend and drain it into your bucket.  Once you retrieve your item, replace the piping and check for leaks before you congratulate yourself on a job well done!

Your toilet handle is a quick fix

Plenty of people become worried about their toilet handle jiggling around. Save yourself some time and money by completing this cheap plumbing repair yourself.  The cause of all your jiggly problems is your flap valve! It costs under $10 at home supply stores and is a quick fix.

Clogged garbage disposal?

If you use your garbage disposal regularly, you may end up with it becoming clogged every once in a while. Avoid that drain cleaner and don’t let food and water sit in your sink until your plumber can get there to help you. All you’ll need is a wrench to manually turn the disposal and clear the jam.

You can stop your toilet from overflowing

If something has happened to cause your toilet to overflow, don’t panic! You don’t have to call an emergency plumber in the middle of the night or on the weekend to help you out. Instead, you can turn off the water supply to your toilet easily and avoid a big mess until you can figure out the cause. Every toilet has a waterline connecting it to, well, the water supply! It feeds directly from your wall into the toilet and each one has a knob. You’ll want to turn this knob until the water flow stops and you’re able to contain the overflow. In some cases, this pipe and knob are very old and not used very often (thankfully!). Instead of hurting your hands and potentially breaking the line, grab some WD-40 or grease to help the knob turn more easily.

You may have to handle older pipes and knobs with care, but the result is the same: you’ve avoided a flood and a call for plumbing repair!
